It seems to me that in the 21st century, the affinity that was once held for the tangible vinyl records has been replaced with a love for the convenience of the digital formats. In a sad way, the vinyl record has been dying out, and with it also dies out the physical attachment and personal sentiments felt towards a physical copy of a record. Instead of lugging around a box full of timeless, precious, and fragile vinyls, DJ’s nowadays have the option to simply carry around a couple USB disk drives and have their entire library at their fingertips. Instead of picking endlessly through vinyl stores in search of that “hidden gem,” DJ’s (and listeners alike) have the ability to torrent, and pirate nearly any song via the internet. The art of touch has in a way been lost, only survived by the few DJ’s who continually use real vinyls (not just time-coded ones). Thus, I always find it extremely refreshing when a company such as Sshh Edits starts to make headway, as I am reminded that many people out there feel the same way that I do.
Sshh Edits consistently releases high-quality tunes, and has been one of the best kept secrets in deep house. Already on it’s sixth release, the record company aims to preserve the now-seen-as “archaic” storage medium of vinyl by releasing their records in limited quantities exclusively in 10″ vinyl format. For this release, Sshh Edits signed on the talented UK duo Zumo (Hypercolour, Flumo, and Save You Records) as well as fellow Bristolian Hugo (Goodvibe Records, Mobilee Records, and 2020 Vision) for a yellow 10″ record built for the warehouse.
The EP kicks off with Zumo’s “Reasons,” an upbeat track that draws on UK garage, bootytech, and deep house influences to create one hell of a dancefloor burner. The stabbing synths contrast the dark and rolling bassline perfectly, with a masterfully-sampled vocal layered in between the two. The thing that really catches me about this track, is the versatility of it. The low frequencies are perfect for the late-night crowd, yet the vocals are reminiscent of those sunny outdoor sets. Hugo’s “True Colours” closes out this two-track EP with a similar upbeat vibe as “Reasons.” The title track contains an extremely soulful vocal sample, and is sure to be a crowd favorite due to the laid-back attitude of the song. The reverb on the vocals fills any open space left by the simple, yet effective bassline production, creating a calming, but definitely dance-inducing sound.
